Elders React to Viral Videos is a new web series by Benny & Rafi Fine (aka The Fine Brothers) on YouTube that features senior citizens reacting and expressing their opinions about viral videos. The debut episode, Elders React to Nyan Cat, is really wonderful, as we get to hear candid remarks from the “elders” about the internet meme, Nyan Cat. They have also included bonus material. You may remember their 2011 video, Kids React to Nyan Cat, that we previously posted.

It’s no secret that I am a big fan of Fluff and last year I befriended someone who is as equally into Fluff as I am, the charming Susan Olsen (“Cindy Brady” of The Brady Bunch). We bonded over our love of Fluff and last fall, we both traveled to the What the Fluff? Festival (photos) in Somerville, Massachusetts where Susan, an artist, sold prints of her Fluff Art. She is also a strong advocate for animal welfare and works with Precious Paws, a nonprofit animal rescue organization in Encino, Calfornia.

If you are in the Los Angeles (Burbank) area tonight, Friday May 11, 2012, there is a fundraising event called A Night With Susan Olsen & Her Art at Theresa’s Family Restaurant. Susan (who has a delightfully quirky sense of humor) will be selling her artwork and handmade Candy Kitten Crap (made with Fluff, of course) to benefit Precious Paws.

We recently posted about Meow the morbidly obese cat who needed a home. Sadly, Meow has died of lung failure. According to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society, Meow developed respiratory issues at his new foster home and passed away on the afternoon of May 5, 2012. The organization is asking people to leave their condolences at their Facebook page. Meow was recently a guest on TV talk show Anderson.

After a physical examination, blood work, and a weight-loss strategy were completed at the shelter, he was transferred to a foster home where he appeared to be active and happy. However, he began to develop respiratory issues.

“When we first heard Meow wheezing, we attributed it to possible allergies or the fact that he was moving around more in his foster home but treated it with further tests and medications,” said Jennifer Steketee, the shelter veterinarian who has been monitoring Meow’s health. “Many obese people and animals wheeze when they walk, but we didn’t want to assume anything.”

When the symptoms worsened toward the end of the week, he was brought in for further testing and taken to an emergency veterinary hospital for continued care. Several veterinary specialists were consulted in Meow’s care but treatment was unsuccessful.

“His extreme obesity may have set off a string of events that ultimately ended his life,” Steketee said.

Houston architect Paul Kweton has designed the Rocking-2-Gether Chair, a clever rocking chair built for both people and animals.

The rocking-2-gether chair (patent pending) is a hybrid between a rocking chair and dog/cat house. This project initially started in 2011, generating digital 3D models. Several 1:8 scale 3D printed models followed, refining the balance and rocking behaviour of the chair. The prototype 2.1 chair is made out of CNC milled birch plywood. The density and amount of the CNC milled “ribs” can be controlled with differently sized wooden spacers (see photographs), ergo controlling the visual connection between the person and his/her pet. The design process and final full scale prototype of the rocking-2-gether chair showcases the successful combination of digital modeling and digital fabrication.

CATS Cradle Shelter in Fargo, North Dakota is home to a rescue kitten named Corky who was born with a rare genetic deformity which gave him criss-crossed and backward hind legs called Bilateral Arthrogryposis of the Tarsus. Young Corky was set to be euthanized when the shelter brought him in for a life-saving surgery by Dr. Dan Burchill of Casselton Veterinary Service. According to Corky’s Facebook page, he is recovering just fine. Donations are being taken at the shelter to help pay for Corky’s corrective surgery.

I was rescued by CATS Cradle Shelter on 3/20/12 from the pound where I was going to go to sleep forever because of my disability. My Cradle mommies saved me and raised enough money to get my legs turned around by a really nice man named Dr. Burchill, so on 4/5/12 they took me to Casselton Veterinary Services and Dr. B. operated on my legs for 5 hours to give me legs that would work better. I have to learn how to walk because I never knew how, I spent my whole life dragging my legs behind me. Now I am a bionic kitteh and I am looking forward to going home and starting my new life.

KRQE recently did a story on Meow, a two year old cat that weighs 39 pounds (equivalent to a 600 pound human) and is currently up for adoption at Santa Fe Animal Humane.

Meow arrived at the shelter several days ago after the 87-year-old owner said she could no longer take care of her. The owner told employees Meow was 2 years old, was fit as a kitten but suddenly ballooned.
