Stan Heller combines photography with anaglyph art to create his illustrations and comics (Anaglyphs are sterographic images that use special glasses with red and cyan lenses to create the illusion of dept). In 3D, a retrospective of Stan’s art, opens this Saturday, November 14th at Mission Comics and Art in San Francisco and runs through December 17th. The show collects 5 years of his experiments with 3D including images from his most recent book “Not Quite Here”.

Stan was also one of the few brave souls who attempted to create a 24 page comic during the recent 24hr Comic Book Day challenge at Mission Comics last month. You can read his 3D comic from that challenge here. Stan also collaborated with me on a this anaglyph to promote my 24hr comic BOOF!, which was created at the same event.

Adam Koford, aka “Ape Lad” had been creating an awesome series of avatars for his Twitter account. In keeping with Twitter’s 140 character limitation, Adam has been restricting the design of his avatars to the shape of the default Twitter bird avatar.

Here’s the an example of a default Twitter avatar for comparison.

“Speechless” is a new site specific public art installation by Brian Goggin located in the new Lafayette Library and Learning Center in Lafayette, CA. Brian will be unveiling of the installation this Saturday, November 14th as part of the grand opening of the library.

Festivities begin at 9:30 am – all ages are encouraged to attend. The grand unveiling commences at 10 am after a short parade from the old library to the new, whereupon a show of fantastic wonder will awe the community at large.

More on Brian Goggin’s “Speechless” installation:

Set against the new Lafayette Library a giant wavering bronze stack of paper rises. Had one taken a page from every book in the library collection – stacking one on top of the other – a stack of paper equivalent in height to this sculpture would result. The towering sculpture winds and teeters reaching absurd, precarious proportions. Wind has caught the top pages blowing them across the outdoor plaza, up and through the stairway corridor. Some pages furl in mid air, flying above the walkways while others wrap around trellis posts, past the library walls. Each fluttering page is precisely etched with “drawings” created with layers of text and graphics from the library’s books. The pages glide through the walkways creating a visual flow inspired by the natural air currents streaming through architectural gullies and star and planet constellations.

The bronze pages allude to all pages ever printed. The etched pages use as their pallet imagery scanned directly from books drawing from all sections of the library’s book collection such as philosophy, literature, math, poetry, history, biography, science, and of course art. The dispersing pages fluttering out from the toppling stack is inspired by the library collection’s grand expansion in size and new knowledge platforms beyond books. The expansion is visually alluded to in this site-specific installation – the concurrent transformation of how we learn is captured by the dynamic, dreamlike flight of the bronze pages wafting gracefully through the air.

Statistically speaking, you are probably already aware of the “Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School” phenomenon. The caberet informed, rock ‘n roll figure drawing event is now in over fifty cities worldwide and gaining momentum frenetically. It’s so popular that the Los Angeles chapter has recently decided to take the show on the road. Dr. Sketchy’s Roadshow is currently traversing California, spreading glitter and pencil shavings from Sacramento to Alhambra.

The sketch-curious of San Francisco can get their Anti-Art School fix monthly at 111 Minna Gallery. Host Alice Stribling taps into the Bay Area’s wealth of unique performers and original characters for models unlike anyone you’ll find at the local art college. The friendly staff at 111 Minna keep the bar open and if you’re lucky, the model might perform a strip-tease at intermission. It’s easy to see how this thing catches on. The next Dr. Sketchy’s SF features punker/burlesque icon, Eva Von Slut. Here’s the info:

Eric Testroete created an amazing papercraft self portrait as a Halloween costume, wearing his surreal big head over his real head.
It was kind of inspired by big-head mode seen in videogames. I really wanted to get the faceted geosphere look with wireframe.
Here’s Eric’s documentation of the project.

The project was created for ArtPrize 2009 and is currently on display at 47 Commerce SW in Grand Rapids, MI.

Large animals captivate like few other beings can. They are deified, hunted, consumed and catalogued. While our culture has seemingly amassed a working knowledge of all living species on the planet, one of the world’s giants has successfully eluded the scientific community for centuries. Save for a few partially decomposed specimens virtually nothing is known of Architeuthis dux, the Giant Squid. Architeuthis is a 60 foot ghost, moving unnoticed through deep and dark.

Our representation of the giant squid was conceived out of a need to see the animal for ourselves, beyond pale museum subjects or small renderings in books. At life size, the true scale of Architeuthis becomes clear, a massive, unfamiliar animal deserving of the same fascination and wonder owed to any whale, elephant or dinosaur. Our intent is to bring the myth into a gratifying real space, and give the viewer a chance to be confronted with one of the largest and most secretive animals to ever live.
