Greek artist Petros Vrellis created this beautiful interactive animated version of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” (video). The interactive work is powered by openFrameworks, an open source coding toolkit for creatives.

Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City, California will be hosting Animal Kingdom, a solo art exhibition featuring original paintings and rare prints by SHAG (aka Josh Agle). The opening reception is Saturday, February 11, 2012 from 7 PM to 10 PM and the exhibition will be open through February 29, 2012. Call him Pavel Puhov, P-183, “Pavel 183″ or, as happens frequently these days, “the Russian Banksy” (as Russia’s RT News do here). By whatever name, he makes inventive, ambitious street art that often has a sharp political point.

The Moscow-based graffiti and street artist has operated for more than a decade, and is reportedly about 30 years old.

Whether adding real fire to a large-scale graffiti portrait of a protestor, installing life-sized decals of riot police to subway station doors so commuters pushing past also undermine their potency, or something more whimsical like his giant-scale candy bars replicas, Pavel’s most exciting work tends to bust its way out of 2 dimensions into 3-D. Recently he’s worked a lot in public projections, like this one featuring the iconic Afghan girl photo from National Geographic:

“Fire Drawings” are fire art pieces in which elaborate designs are scorched into wood. The designs are etched into the wood panels, the etchings are filled with flammable paint, and then the paint is allowed to slowly burn (video). “Fire Drawings” are by London-based design company Studio Glithero.

The protagonist in the Fire Drawings is a flame. It travels through time over a path of flammable screen-printed paint, multiplying or merging together, drawing, leaving a decorative charcoal trace as it goes along.

The Haight-Ashbury Museum of Psychedelic Art and History is a proposed permanent museum that will focus on psychedelic art and Haight-Ashbury’s role in the psychedelia movement of the 1960s (video). Museum supporters are raising funds for the project on IndieGoGo.

The Haight-Ashbury movement left an undeniable impact upon the world and the reverberations of the psychedelic sixties are still being felt today. Strangely there is no museum dedicated to keeping the history alive and relevant for the millions of visitors who come to San Francisco searching for inspiration and authenticity. A non-profit community supported museum will permanently cement San Francisco as the home of psychedelia. Our intention is for the museum to become an attraction in and of itself that will educate and inspire visitors for generations to come to reinvent the world according to how they want to live.

Artist Gwyneth Leech creates intricate paintings and drawings on used coffee cups. Since September of last year, Leech has been filling the Sprint Prow ArtSpace at the Flatiron Building in Manhattan with hundreds of coffee cup artworks (more than 700 at last count). She can be seen working in the art space Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 2pm. The project, entitled “Hypergraphia,” runs through February 18.

I like my hot coffee or tea in a paper take-out cup, like millions of my fellow citizens. Even better than the contents, I like the used cup as a surface to draw and paint on. And before I begin I like to inscribe the date, location and occasion on which the beverage was consumed so that every cup becomes the record of a social moment.

The show opens Friday February 10, 2012 and runs through March 3, 2012. The opening reception begins at 7 PM on February 10, 2012. You may remember last year when Gallery1988 Venice hosted Multiplayer, the gallery’s first show of video game art posters.

Artist and culture jammer Ron English recently took a family vacation to Detroit to enjoy some sightseeing and to make a little street art. eBaum’s World was on hand to document “The Detroit Project” (part 1, part 2, part 3).

After breakfast, cars are packed for the road trip. Large items first: tubs of wheat paste and brushes, camera equipment and suitcases. The remaining space is jammed with poster tubes of pre-printed and sliced graphics, cans of spray paint, and, last but not least, people.

Vienna-based art collective Monochrom has released the short film Earthmoving, a prequel to their forthcoming Sierra Zulu feature film (previous post). Earthmoving was filmed on location at the UN headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

Another day at the United Nations Offices in Vienna. The Austrian Foreign Affairs Ministry invited members of the European Protocol Service, the UN Strategic Command Center for Central Europe, the United States Air Forces and a regional politician from Lower Austria to talk about the future of Soviet Unter-WHAT?!

Phineas X. Jones of Octophant has created Squid in Morning Dress, an illustration of a squid looking rather dapper. The art’s screenprints were created in collaboration with Nevermind Gallery who have made two versions available to purchase. Last year, we posted an earlier version of this illustration.

“PASS/PORT” is a five book set about different issues surrounding international travel. Each book is designed to resemble a passport. The set was created by Lebanese designer Marwan Kaabour.

PASS/PORT is a set of 5 books in the form of passports that critically investigate the different parts of the travel process. The project attempts to represent the ways the travel document embodies the very essence of restriction rather than allows passage. Our political borders are as closed as ever at a time when our notion of the world is that of a global village or an open city.

“Tape Recorders” by Mexican artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is an interactive art installation in which motorized tape measures record the presence of nearby onlookers by slowly extending (video). When a tape reaches about nine feet, it flops over suddenly (anyone who has used a tape measure will recognize this behavior). The installation is on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney through February 12.

Rows of motorised measuring tapes record the amount of time that visitors stay in the installation. As a computerised tracking system detects the presence of a person, the closest measuring tape starts to project upwards. When the tape reaches around 3 meters high it crashes and recoils back.

Ms. Tanning in 2010 by Sylvia Plachy

The Dorothea Tanning Foundation has confirmed that American surrealist painter, sculptor and poet Dorothea Tanning died on January 31, 2012 at the age of 101. Tanning, a brilliant artist, writer and the oldest surviving Surrealist, had been married to German painter Max Ernst for thirty years until his death in 1976. In 2011, Graywolf Press had published Coming to That, a book of new poems from Ms. Tanning.
