Last Friday a bunch of us were hanging out at Burp Castle, a “Temple of Beer Worship” in New York’s East Village. It’s one of Mike Hudack’s favorite bars and a blip.tv hangout and now its one my favorite New York bars as well, but it’s not just any ordinary bar. The overall theme is that of beer brewing monks and the walls are covered with wonderful murals depicting monks and general hedonism. A great place to shoot some photos.
Of course the bar has an amazing selection of beers, all served in appropriate glassware, but all of that is not what makes it unique. When the conversation in the bar reaches a certain volume, the barkeep shushes everyone and the room drops to a dead silence, only to rise up again over time for a re-shushing. There’s even a plaque on the wall warning against “loud talking”. It’s quite an interesting cycle, especially after a few rounds of finely crafted beers.
