An Inquisitive Octopus Tries to Dismantle a Diver’s Underwater Camera

Videographer Joe Kistel of marine conservation non-profit TISIRI encountered a very inquisitive octopus which proceeded to latch on to the housing of his underwater camera while filming marine wildlife at a reef off the coast of Florida earlier this month. Moments later, the octopus began removing a critical water sealing gasket — much to the alarm of Kistel. Luckily, Kistel interrupted the octopus before it succeeded in opening the casing, which would have likely caused problems for the $15,000 camera. The encounter was not Kistel’s first interaction with the little octopus — on an earlier dive, Kistel filmed as the octopus charged a fellow diver.
