I'm more understanding about the single-letter thing; personally I usually write "There are two Ts in 'kittens'." Or even 90's. I don't know, maybe I'm being persnickety, but both Chicago and AP styles dictate '90s because apostrophes also denote the omission of letters (or in this case, numbers)...hence why we use apostrophes in contractions.
