An Exploration of the Illusion of Space Flight by Shanks FX

Shanks FX, a series of videos by Joey Shanks and produced by PBS Digital Studios, explores how old movies and television shows mimicked space flight in projects like Star Wars and Star Trek by moving the camera rather than the model, and attempts to recreate some of these scenes himself.

To create a spaceship flying through outer space, the effects wizards of yesteryear used simple techniques of keeping the model spaceship still, and having the camera move in towards the objects. This would give the illusion that the ship was moving.
