An Amateur Astronomer With a Homemade Telescope Has Discovered Over 300 Near Earth Asteroids

Amateur astronomer Gary Hug has used his homemade telescope and Sandlot observatory to discover more than 300 near earth asteroids. Hug recently discussed his work in a video by Great Big Story.

Gary Hug turned his fascination with asteroids into more than just a hobby. He built an observatory behind his house, and courtesy of his homemade reflector telescope, the “amateur” asteroid tracker has identified 300 flaming balls of ice and rock.
