A Group of Determined Turtles Struggle to Maintain Their Balance on a Slippery Log in a Murky Pond

While touring through Mason Neck State Park in Fairfax County, Virginia, visitor Nancy Hwa captured the amusing sight of four turtles who were struggling to maintain their balance on a slippery log after a fifth one tried to join them. The four turtles had been peacefully sunning themselves amidst the very murky “Turtle Pond” before the interloper appeared.

I shot this on Sunday, April 24, 2016, at Mason Neck State Park in Lorton, VA. The park has a pond, appropriately called “Turtle Pond.” I noticed one turtle attempting to climb onto a log where four other turtles were already sunning themselves. This log was less stable than other logs in the pond, so it was amusing to see what happened next.
