Real World Guitar Hero Riding A Bicycle

posted by Scott Beale on Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Kevin of Ft. Wayne recreated a level of Guitar Hero riding his bicycle through the neighborhood. The song is “Prisoner of Society” by The Living End with the difficulty level set to “hard”. Of course it’s possible that this is a viral video produced to promote Guitar Hero, but nonetheless it’s very creative.

Exploring the Tenderloin National Forest

Tenderloin National Forest

Tenderloin National Forest

Tenderloin National Forest

The Tenderloin District in San Francisco is one of the city’s most diverse, yet grimiest neighborhoods. However, there are still some special jewels to be found deep within the Tenderloin. One of them is located at Cohen Alley - The Tenderloin National Forest.

The Tenderloin National Forest began as an idea by Darryl Smith, the founder of The Luggage Store Gallery, in 1989 and work transforming the alley started in 2005.

Now, the alley way is home to a small garden, beautiful murals and is protected by a gate.

The Tenderloin National Forest is open to visitors if the gate is open (nearly every time I’ve walked by, it’s been closed). However, it is open to the public from Noon to 5pm on the 15th of every month.

The San Francisco Chronicle recently had an article about the alley as well.

More photos from the Tenderloin National Forest can be found in this set of photos I posted on flickr.

Tweetsville, A Straightforward iPhone App For Twitter

posted by Scott Beale on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I’m always on the hunt for the perfect iPhone app for Twitter and lately I’ve been using Tweetsville. I love how it shows up to 200 updates in the timeline. It also includes separate sections for Twitter search and Twitter trends, plus an option to show full names, which is great since I don’t always remember people’s screen names.

Tweetsville creator Ed Voas talks about how it was developed.

Also check out the VentureBeat write-up on Tweetsville by MG Siegler.

The Monty Python Channel on YouTube

posted by Doctor Popular on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

guest post by Doctor Popular

“For 3 years you YouTubers have been ripping us off,” begins a recent Monty Python announcement “taking tens of thousands of our videos and putting them on YouTube.” Rather than firing off endless rounds of cease and desist letters, the Pythons have decided to tackle the problem by creating their own YouTube channel. The Monty Python Channel offers high quality versions of classic skits, new interviews, and rare archival footage. Of course it’s all free, but the guys encourage you to click the links to buy their dvds, shirts, etc.

Thanks Schalicto for the tip.

Thingiverse, Sharing Digital Designs For Physical Objects

posted by Scott Beale on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Zach Hoeken and Bre Pettis have just launched Thingiverse, a place to share digital designs for physical objects. Fred Benenson of Creative Commons wrote about their various of licensing options, referring to Thingiverse as “Flickr for the Maker set”.

Thingiverse is a place for you to share your digital designs with the world. We believe that just as computing shifted away from the mainframe into the personal computer that you use today, digital fabrication will share the same path. Infact, it is already happening: laser cutters, cnc machines, 3D printers, and even automated paper cutters are all getting cheaper by the day. These machines are useful for a huge variety of things, but you need to supply them with a digital design in order to get anything useful out of them. We’re hoping that together we can create a community of people who create and share designs freely, so that all can benefit from them.

Based on the tomato fight in Buñol, Spain outside of Valencia, the food fight consisted of 15 participants and 15 people who showed up just to document the mess. The SF Weekly even came out to cover the ensuing battle.

Brian Goggin & Dorka Keehn Unveil The Language Of The Birds

posted by Simone Davalos on Monday, November 17th, 2008

guest post by Simone Davalos

The Language Of The Birds

Site specific sculpture artist Brian Goggin, with Dorka Keehn, is unveiling their new installation “The Language Of The Birds” on Sunday, November 23rd, 2008, at dusk (watch the sky, not the clock!) in San Francisco on the northwest corner of Broadway and Columbus, where Grant and Columbus intersect in North Beach.

The Language Of The Birds

Brian Goggin, who is also know for the Defenestration sculpture at 6th and Howard Streets in San Francisco, among others, is collaborating with artist Dorka Keehn on The Language Of The Birds.

From Metaphorm.org:

This public artwork is a sculpted, illuminated flock of twenty three translucent, suspended open books with bindings positioned as if they are the wings of birds in flight. These books will appear to be taking off and flying above the plaza.

Phrases, taken from books by neighborhood authors or written about the surrounding communities, will be scattered and embedded in the plaza as if the words have fallen from the pages, forming an aesthetically beautiful and random pattern. The words will maintain their fonts from the books and will range from 1.5’’ to 3”.

At night the books will act as fluctuating lanterns light up by internal LED lights. The changing lights effects will be prompted by the unamplified beat and tempo in selected recordings of Jazz and other music played in the area over the last fifty years.

Rumors about the actual unveiling of the piece hint to a choreographed extravaganza involving The Extra Action Marching Band, dancing in the streets, and being deeply appreciative of the San Francisco Arts Community. Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisor Aaron Peskin, SF Arts Commission Executive Director Luis R. Cancel and other honored guests will speak before the hardcore partying gets started.

See more about the piece at Brian’s site, Metaphorm.org

Kaiju Big Battel Returns To Destroy San Francisco (Canceled)

posted by Scott Beale on Monday, November 17th, 2008

Kaiju Big Battel San Francisco

Kaiju Big Battel, featuring epic wresting matches between Japanese city destroying monsters, returns to crush San Francisco (with special guests Busdriver and Rocktapussy) this Wednesday, November 19th at The Regency Center’s Grand Ballroom. Kaiju Big Battel will also wreak havoc in Los Angeles on November 20th.

Kaiju Big Battel is a modern conflict of epic proportions. Planet Earth is under threat: scattered throughout the galaxy is a monstrous mob of maniacal villains, menacing alien beasts, and giant, city-crushing monsters that are waging war against one another. Presiding over this mayhem is the Kaiju Commissioner, an enigmatic human-arbiter appointed by a clandestine cadre of world leaders to regulate Kaiju rage. If the Kaiju Commissioner doesn’t do his job perfectly the entire world could get caught in the crossfire.

Currently, the Kaiju Universe maintains an active roster of approximately 50 monsters, including a factory-worker-turned-soup-can called Kung-Fu Chicken Noodle, a dirty hare-sage dubbed Dusto Bunny, a loser sea beast known as Call-Me-Kevin, and a despicable, square-headed mad scientist known as Dr. Cube. In addition to the Kaiju Commissioner, a few privileged humans also get a piece of the action, including Referee Jingi, a mustachioed official who enforces fairness and civility in the ring, Davio Salbino, an urban renewal expert who reconstructs crumbled cityscapes between Battels, and one tuxedo-wearing, mouth-running MC, Louden Noxious.

UPDATE: Both the San Francisco and Los Angeles shows have been canceled.

The Kaiju Commissioner made this statement:

“This decision to cancel the Kaiju Big Battel events in Los Angeles and San Francisco WAS NOT made by Kaiju Big Battel. If we had it our way, we would be crushing your city this week.

We thank you very much for your desire to support Kaiju Big Battel. Our fans are truly important to us, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused them. We hope to make it back to your city soon.”

For those fans already holding tickets, refunds are available at the point of purchase.

Thanks to M2 for the tip!
